REVIEWED BY DEBS CARR
Janie Johnson is single. She enjoys her job as a hairdresser and listening to her clients talking about their relationships, holidays and plans. She has her own cottage in a pretty village, which she shares with Archibald the Aggressive, a vicious ex-feral cat who doesn't take kindly to strangers, or anyone at all really. Her newly, single neighbour, Mike spends occasional evenings with her and together they watch DVDs and chat.
However, Janie doesn't enjoy being single. She's fed up with her clients trying to set her up with men they consider 'suitable'. She eventually gives in to her best friend Nina and goes on a blind date, but when that goes disasterously wrong and he refuses to believe she isn't just playing hard-to-get, Janie decides it's time to make a few changes to her life. She takes the advice of one of her regular clients, Mrs Silverton, and books a trip to the Maasai Mara.
Janie and the small group she's travelling with arrive in Kenya and meet their guide, a Maasai warrior, known as Dominic. It's then that Janie's life begins to change and possibilities she's never considered before start opening up for her. Can she really expect to fall in love with a Maasai warrior and could there ever be any future for two people with such different lives? Janie has to make some decisions and work out what is important to her and also find a way to deal with her friend's reactions to those choices.
Carole Matthews is such an excellent writer that as soon as I started reading the first page I was hooked. I loved Janie's determination to change her life and her fiesty devotion to the man she falls in love with. To be honest, the cover alone would make me want to buy this book, but the love story inside makes perfect reading for the dreary months we no doubt have to look forward to. I've now put Kenya on my wish list of places to visit.
