Having recently returned to her home town, Farwell Creek after spending two years living and working in the city, Bec O’Connell is finding fitting in with those closest to her a little harder than she expected.
Her best friend Hailey is doing her best to deal with the grief of losing both her parents in an accident; her mother, when she isn’t arguing with Bec, seems to spend most of her time in tears; and her childhood sweetheart, Nick Price appears to have lost any feelings he once professed to have for her.
When the local schoolteacher’s cottage catches fire, the three friends work next to each other in a desperate attempt to stop it spreading any further into the town. Bec calls a meeting and announces that the time has come for the town to form their own volunteer fire brigade. However fire engines cost money, a commodity the people of Farwell Creek do not have in abundance, so when Gordo, the handsome foreman in charge of rebuilding the cottage comes up with a perfect solution to raise enough funds for the vehicle everyone seems happy with it. Everyone except Nick.
Bec doesn’t understand what has happened to change Nick’s feelings towards her, and if he is so disinterested in her, then why does he act so strangely when Gordo asks her out? What is causing her mother to act so out of character? Is it something Bec has said or done to her without realizing? And is Gordo as perfect as he’d like everyone to believe? As Becs begins preparations for the Bachelor and Spinster Ball she hopes she can keep everything under control, but will it be that easy?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I usually prefer a book to be written from one or even two points of view, but in The Bachelor and Spinster Ball we are also given the points of view of several other characters and it works very well. Janet Gover’s characters are well written and believable. I especially loved Nick Price.
This is a great book and definitely worth reading.
